Three SATELLITE CLINICS on the West Coast
Together with Amanda Katz Architects

Satellite Clinic - A facility that is a fixed building where one or more rooms are permanently equipped and from which a range of PHC services are provided. It is open for up to 8 hours per day and less than 4 days per week. (National Department of Health ‐ Health Facility Definitions November 2006)

The Western Cape Government Department of Health identified three communities on the west coast of the Western Cape - Abbotsdale, Chatsworth and Steenberg's Cove - where clinics were either non-existent or operating from inadequate shared community facilities.

The brief called for a generic building that could be located on a selected site in each of the three communities with minimal if any adjustment. The brief was also quite specific regarding the layout and included a detailed block diagram of a 16m x 9m rectangular plan.

The design intention was that the facility should fit comfortably within the surrounding built fabric of the three communities, visible as a public building but not intrusive. The rectangular block provided with the brief would have resulted in a single bulky building. We therefore shaped the block into two distinct blocks, one slightly larger than the other to assist in breaking up the bulk. As a further device to break up the bulk we introduced hierarchy in the height of the two rectangles.

The deliberate breaking up of the bulk created the opportunity to shape a building form familiar to the three sites ‐ the long barn with adjacent lean-to roofed structure.

The main waiting area was located in the larger rectangle and given a steep-shaped roof creating the dominant barn form. The smaller rectangle containing three Consulting Rooms, Observation Room, Staff Area, Toilets and ancillary spaces was designed as the secondary lean-to roofed component.

The main waiting area was required to have an overflow space. A generous covered stoep, in keeping with the contextual form, was provided alongside the waiting area, together with a low edge wall for informal seating. At Abbotsdale the stoep offers calming distant views across the valley, at Chatsworth the view is towards the surrounding houses and at Steenberg's Cove, being at the coast, the view is towards the sea.

All three buildings have been completed and as the landscaping grows we look forward to these clinics settling quietly into the respective communities.
